Geocache Description:

Orkney Community cache

You're looking for a camoed medium size Lock 'n Lock hidden in the 'busy' part of the Orkney community.

The community was settled in the early 1900s and by 1912 there were sufficient numbers of children in the area to warrant a school. And so, a school district was established which, due to many of the homesteaders having come from the Orkney Isles, was named ‘Orkney’. Rocks for the foundation of the school were hauled from the creek, and lumber and other supplies came from Munson, which was at that time the nearest town. Thought this may seem simple enough now, remember that there was no ferry! Thus, locals hauled the lumber through the Red Deer River valley during the winter when the river was frozen.

Construction of the school started in the spring of 1913, and the first classes were held that same fall. By 1929 a new school was build and the old school house was moved west to the site of the Presbyterian Church. The Orkney School was the last remain ‘one-room-school’ in the region when it finally closed in 1975.

The church had been meeting in congregant’s homes, but when the original school house was build it began meeting there. Due to the severe shortage of ministers needed to serve the many small congregations on the prairies, the Methodist and Presbyterian denominations agreed to the following: the Methodists would serve the churches east of the river, and the Presbyterians the churches west of the river. Orkney, therefore, became a Presbyterian church.

When the new school was build, the congregation finally had its own home. In 1953 a new church was build on the same location – this church still stands today. Would you believe that Orkney Presbyterian Church had 33 children enrolled in Sunday School in 1971?

As you hunt for this cache, just think of the many people who have been part of this small prairie community!
