This cache is on the summit of Spring Mountain (elevation 345m). There are various ways to access the area, all will involve tackling some steep terrain to reach GZ.
Spring Mountain is part of the White Rock - Spring Mountain Conservation Estate. This was not always such a peaceful area. During the Second World War US Troops of the 32nd Division based at Camp Cable trained in the area. Australian soldiers from the 6th Battalion RAR trained at Spring Mountain in 1966 before going to Vietnam. They were later to fight in the Battle of Long Tan in August 1966. 18 Australians were killed and 24 wounded in this battle. When you reach the cache site please take a moment to remember those who have served, and those who are currently serving.
There are many trails in the area, and near Spring Mountain itself you may encounter trail bikes. If you do hear a motorbike approaching the best thing is to get well off the track as quickly as possible and stay there until the bike/s have passed or you are sure they are on a different track. They tend to travel quite quickly and the riders may not be expecting you on the track.
When I placed the cache I walked in from the Paperbark Flats Picnic Area and was able to follow well formed tracks all the way to the base of Spring Mountain. Click here for information. If you decide to go with this option you should allow 5-6 hours for the return trip if walking. There are probably shorter routes to get there so by all means study the maps and make your own adventure!
