Geocache Description:

A series of caches in a good walking area steeped in history.

This series of caches are set along a stretch of the red river valley linking Stonkens red river cache and bonus with the Tuckingmill valley caches. A fun series suitable for walkers, horse riders and cyclists. I’m afraid the terrain is a bit rough for wheelchairs but children’s buggies should be ok. At the first cache location please take time to read the memorial plaque honouring the lives of 4 members of squadron SBX who lost their lives here and please respect the location.
There is no need to move any stones or disturb any of the undergrowth. If you use your eyes you will be able to see the cache.
The walk takes you on through the valley where once the river was streamed for tin and other important metals that had been missed from the mining at South Crofty and the mines at Tuckingmill Valley. The tin has deposited itself along the banks of the river making it a ruddy colour. This particular river starts as a spring up on the moor at Bolenowe and winds its way down to Godrevy where it flows into the sea. In the 60’s and 70’s when Crofty was still mined the river used to leave a wide deposit of tin in the bay at Godrevy making the sea red and not very inviting to swim in, but now due to environmental pressures the river runs fairly clear. Along the route you will pass the entrance of Duchy College. Once a horticultural experimental station you will still see sections of different trees including eucalyptus growing here. The land is now used by the college to teach agriculture, horticulture and animal care. After passing the college entrance there is a short stretch of road which you have to walk on please take extreme care especially with children as cars come over the brow of the hill quite fast sometimes. After 250 yds you turn off into a quiet no through road. Hope you enjoy this series and benefit from a nice walk in this location however some of the caches can be obtained as cache and dashes with parking quite close by.
