Große Binnendüne bei Klein-Schmölen
Bei Klein Schmölen erhebt sich die größte Binnenwanderdüne Europas aus den ansonsten flachen Elbtalauen.
Vor etwa 15.000 Jahren, am Ende der letzten großen Eiszeit (Weichseleiszeit), war Norddeutschland aufgrund des rauhen Klimas weitgehend vegetationslos. Weite Teile des Landes ähnelten einer Steppenlandschaft, in der die Böden und Gesteine schutzlos dem arktischen Klima ausgesetzt waren.
Stürme und starke Winde bliesen über die Landschaft, nahmen dabei Sandkörner vom Boden auf lagerten sie an anderer Stelle wieder ab. Prozesse, die in der Geologie als "Winderosion" und "Windtransport" bezeichnet werden und die man heute beispielhaft in den Wüstenlandschaften der Erde beobachten kann. Als Relikte dieses Massentransportes durch den Wind gelten die im Norden Deutschlands befindlichen Flugsanddecken und Dünenbildungen.
Diese Dünen finden sich nicht nur in den Küstengebieten sondern auch in den großen Heidegebieten und Flußtalauen.
Der Binnendünenkomplex bei Klein Schmölen erstreckt sich auf circa 110 Hektar. Mit 43 Metern Höhe erreicht die höchste Binnendüne beachtliche Ausmaße. Teile des Dünenkomplexes sind bis heute vegetationsfrei und bei kräftigen Winden finden Materialtransporte an diesen Hängen statt. Der größte Teil der Dünen wurde allerdings mit Kiefern aufgeforstet.
Rund um die Dünenlandschaft lädt ein abwechslungsreicher 2,4 km langer Lehrpfad zum Wandern ein. Auf diesem Weg erfährt man mehr über die Entstehung der Dünen und über den besonderen Lebensraum der Tiere und Pflanzen.
Um diesen Earthcache zu loggen, müsst Ihr folgende Aufgaben lösen:
1) Macht ein Foto von Euch und/oder eurem GPS auf der Düne an Position N 53° 07,459 E 11° 18,069 mit Blick auf das Elbtal und ladet es mit dem Logeintrag hoch (siehe Beispielfoto)
2) Wie heißen die drei Dünenzüge im Volksmund ?
3) Wie wird der Nordhang der Dünen genannt ?

Large inland dune near Klein-Schmölen
In the vicinity of Klein Schmölen is the largest inland dune in Europe.
About 15,000 years, at the end of the last great ice age (Weichsel Ice Age), northern Germany was a steppe. Large parts of the country resembled a desert landscape, where the soils and rocks were exposed unprotected to the Arctic climate.
Storms and strong winds blowing across the landscape, took it off the ground on sand grains were stored on another site again. The dunes in the north of Germany are relics of the mass transport through the wind. These dunes are found not only in the coastal areas but also in the major river valleys.
The inland dunes in Klein- Schmölen have an area of approximately 110 hectares. With 43 meters reached the highest inland dunes considerable proportions. Parts of the dune complex are still free of vegetation. In strong winds, the sand on the slopes will be further transported. Most of the dunes was reforested with pine trees.
Around the dunes invites varied 2.4 km long nature trail for hiking. This way you can learn more about the origin of the dunes and on the specific habitat of animals and plants.
To log this cache, you must solve your following tasks:
1) Take a picture of you and/or your GPS on the dune at position N 53 ° 07.459 E 11 ° 18.069 overlooking the Elbe valley and upload it up with the log entry (see example photo)
2) How the three dune trains are called in the vernacular?
3) As the northern slope of the dune is called?
