Geocache Description:

This is another cache in the series Power to the People - a series of caches about the production of electricity for Darwin.

Berrimah Power Station was hurriedly established after the devastation of Cyclone Tracey to enable some power to be restored to essential services such as the hospital and emergency services in the event of a another serious cyclone.

This station is not powered by Natural Gas and is a carbon polluter about the same as most power stations in the rest of Australia.

Construction of this station was commenced in 1977 and the commissioning was completed in early 1979. The plant has been scheduled for decommissing since 1990, but is still used from time to time as a peaking power station.

The two generators are each powered by a Pratt & Witney gas turbines. The design of which derived from the turbine used for the Boeing 707 passenger jet.

The turbines are fuelled by liquid fuel.

Each turbine has a rated output of 12,000kW which provides sufficient power for about 4,000 homes.

The power from the station is transmitted via 66,000 Volt transmission lines into the Darwin power grid.

The cache is a small eclipse tin and holds a log, and cache notes on water proof paper. There is room for a pencil and small swaps, but bring your own pen or pencil just in case.

The cache is away from the road and is child safe. So take a drive and visit this and the other caches along the road and as always be safe and enjoy.

Do not forget to track down the other caches in the series and learn a little about what keeps the lights and power available here in Darwin
