Geocache Description:

Located near the beautiful sandy beach of Porthor. It is also known as Whistling Sands due to the noise the dry sand makes when you walk on it. It is thought to be one of only two beaches in Europe where the sand composition makes the sand 'whistle'. I think it sounds more like a squeak

The beach is pretty accessible with plenty of parking available at the top of a steep hill (charge in high season) and very limited disabled parking at the bottom of the hill, a 'stone's throw' from the cache. If the disabled car park is full it can be very difficult to turn around.
Please don't use the disabled car park unless you need to!
There is a lovely cafe with sun terrace next to the beach open during the warmer months.
The beach can also be accessed by the coastal paths.
Look out for dolphins and seals which are often seen from the shore.
An article in The Times Newspaper on August 8th 2008, written by Chris Haslam who was touring the UK looking for the best beaches said this about Porth Oer.
"They call the beach at Porth Oer the Whistling Sands – and, when you walk on the powdery grains, you’ll realise why. Some argue that the sound is more of a squeak than a whistle, but let’s not split hairs – it’s an expression of joy uttered by the most spectacularly beautiful stretch of sand on the Lleyn Peninsula. It’s not a fashionable choice, I know – Hell’s Mouth, next door, and Barafundle Bay, in Pembrokeshire, are the guidebook favourites – but with its pumping point break, a maze of canyons chock-full of teeming rock pools, a great little beach cafe and the best castle-building sand north of Weymouth, Porth Oer is a contender for best beach of the trip to date."
The cache is a small cliplock and wheelchair users will need some assistance to reach it.
Placed with kind permission of the National Trust, who have asked that all Geocaching rules are followed especially no food, soap, matches, flammable items, sharp objects that could harm wildlife or children.
Please rehide with care so it is not exposed
