The Black Wood of
Rannoch is one of the last remnants of the vast Caledonian Forest.
It is also now a Special Area of Conservation, protected for the
many special plants and animals that live there. Careful visitors
will see deer and red squirrels. Still as church mice ones, towards
the end of the day, may even see pine marten. Then again, the kind
of folk that should be buying Lottery tickets will see them scamper
in front of the car . . .
This series begins from the car park at N 56.41.044 W 004.15.588
(to differentiate it from the Kilvrecht camp site one close by).
Along the way you will do bits of the Carie Walk (red route),
Kilvrecht Walk (blue route) and the Allt na Bogair Walk (yellow
route) and cross three of four bridges.
It’s not all pines hereabouts. You’ll see more birch
and oak to begin with.
