This is the third in a series of geocaches highlighting the work that Ducks Unlimited undertakes in BC.
Tunkwa Lake is a world renown trout fishing destination. It is a lake of many shallows, with weed beds that harbor the insect larva that make up the majority of the trout’s food.
The lake is man made. Early ranchers in the area built the low earthen dam, and diverted Durand Creek into the catchment to store water for haying operations downstream, closer to Kamloops Lake. As the dam aged, it began to leak, and the lowered water levels quickly began to threaten the fishery, as well as the very productive waterfowl breeding habitat the lake provided. Ducks Unlimited stepped in along with the BC Government, the BC Habitat Conservation Trust Fund and the Tunkwa-Durand Water Users Group to replace the aged dam and water control devices in the entire system. The results of this work, along with agreements with government, ranchers and water licensees has enhanced the entire watershed for wildlife, industry and recreation.
When placed, the cache contained some DU trade items, a pencil and log book, as well as medallions for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd to find.
