This section of highway is a far cry from the narrow twisting
section it replaced in 2003. Cache is a drive-by, safely approached
when heading south-pull completely off the road a few hundred
metres beyond end of passing lane. Keep an eye on kids here. Not
safe to stop northbound.

The Mamaku Bluffs realignment project commenced in January 2001 and
took 2½ years of construction to complete. The $3.3 million dollar
Transit NZ project was to realign a 2.5 km length of highway to
provide a safer highway, provide passing lanes in both directions
and creating better traffic flow. Historical caves and native bush
in the Scenic Reserve were preserved. Some 290,000m3 of fill
material was moved, with the largest cut being a vertical height of
15metres. Getting the above "matching"photo confirmed this height!
Cache is a lot easier to access!
