This multi-stage Cache is set around the picturesque village of Upwood. Most of the walk can be done on good paths, but a couple of locations require you to walk on the road. However, traffic is generally light.
Upwood is believed to have been founded by Earl Ailwine in the mid-late 900s. Upon his death in 992, Upwood was given to Ramsey Abbey, to whom it belonged until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, when it was granted to the Cromwell family.
During 19th and 20th centuries, Upwood acquired an excellent reputation for its wheelwrights and carpenters, including the Murfin family.
The former RAF base, just outside the village towards Ramsey, was established in 1917. It played an important role in World War 2 being part of the famous Pathfinder Group. Mosquitos and Lancasters were both based here. Although long since closed as an RAF base, part of it remains as an important medical centre for the USAF.
The Co-Ordinates for suggested parking are N52 25.687 W00 08.957 which is on the roadside of the street running through the village (near the public telephone box).
During your walk, keep your eyes peeled for a number of fine old buildings.
