Geocache Description:

There are a number of ways to reduce your carbon footprint and live a more earth-friendly lifestyle. Some of them are more feasible than others. The goal of this geocache is to provide an overview of some of the aspects of sustainable living. Many of the options below cost nothing, zero, zilch, zip. What are you waiting for?

Make your garden more environmentally friendly

1. Use perennial Vegetables. instead of annuals.

2. Plant edibles including trees, vines, bushes, and ground-covers, to reduce your carbon footprint and have a "farmer's market at home".

3. Avoid using dust blowers and other dust-producing equipment.

4. Use compost barrels. Create your own soil. When they decompose your enriched soil may return nutrients to the land.

5. Use recycled wood chips to keep the weeds down, retain moisture, and prevent erosion.

6. Use natural predators rather than pesticides which harm the environment.

7. Water grass early in the morning.

8. Borrow seldomly used items such as ladders, and chain saws instead of buying them.

9. Put leaves in a compost heap instead of burning them or throwing them away.

10. Install water barrels to collect rain water from troughs. Place a small bucket in your sink to collect water when washing produce. Use this water in the garden.

Reduce Reuse Recycle

1. Reduce the need to copy and print. When you need to, copy and print on both sides of the paper.

2. Reuse items like envelopes, folders, and paper clips.

3. Set up a bulletin board for memos rather than sending copies to each employee.

4. Use recycled paper and recycle printer cartridges.

5. Use Soy based ink which is very environmentally friendly.

6. Use more reusable water bottles rather than disposable cups or plastic bottles.

7. Turn off power strips and lights at the end of the day.

8. Consider flexible work schedules or telecommuting.

9. Switch from paper towels in restrooms to continuous cloth towels.

Smart Transportation

1. If possible, live where you work. Consider reducing the number of trips you take by habit.

2. Consider car pooling.

3. Consider using your bike, feet, or local transit for most transportation needs (including geocaching).

4. For your next vehicle purchase, consider purchasing a Hybrid vehicle, an Electric Motorbike or more efficient car.

5. Purchase radial tires and keep them properly inflated to increase gas mileage.

6. Drive during non-peak hours can help avoid heavy traffic and have a significant decrease on the amount of gas wasted during stops.

7. Plan out your trips so that you may do multiple errands on one trip instead of several single errand trips. Less time on the road is less gas. More money in your pocket and less damage to the environment.

8. Avoid idling your vehicle. The best way to warm up a modern car is to drive it. Idling hurts engines, wastes gas, and contributes to global warming and pollution.

Diet

1. Increase your plant consumption. More land has to be put into agricultural production to produce meat than to produce plant products. Because methane (CO) is 21 times more effective at retaining heat than carbon dioxide (CO2), domestic animals contribute more to global warming than all human transportation combined.

2. Buy local products. Buy goods that were produced locally rather than transported across long distances.

3. Be particular about the fish you eat. Many fish are over harvested or their capture has negative impacts on ocean ecosystems. In addition, some species of seafood pose health risks due to heavy metals and toxins that have built up in their systems. Choose seafood that is both sustainable and healthy.

To locate the geocache, you will have to answer the following questions which can be found in the above information.
