Phrynosoma cornutum is better known as the Texas Horned
Lizard. Various other names include Horned Lizard, Horny Lizard,
Horned Toad, and Horny Toad. It is, of course, a lizard and not a
toad at all.
Horned Lizards are fairly small, averaging just 3 inches (and up to
7 inches), flat-bodied and covered in spiky scales. They can be
reddish in color, yellow, or grey. They also have a very prominent
"crown" of horns on their head. They do live in Missouri, though
nowhere near this cache. They live just in the southwestern corner
but are quite rare here.
Horned Lizards are out during the day hunting large ants, which is
the vast majority of their diet. When threatened most Horned Lizard
species do very bizarre things. One such thing is playing dead,
another is puffing up to look larger and less edible. The most
bizarre is squirting blood from their eyes. Yes, you read that
right! So, as with the others lizards, it's not recommended you try
to catch one if you see one while caching on it's home turf. You
might get an unpleasant surprise!
