Geocache Description:

2010 marked the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The BSA theme For the year was "Get Into the Game" based on geocaching. Many states participated in the Cache to Eagle Series (CTE). Vermont participated with three geocaches hidden in each of our BSA Districts:

  • Ethan Allen District - Serving Addison, Bennington and Rutland Counties .
  • Calvin Coolidge District - Serving Windsor and Windham Counties .
  • Three Rivers District - Serving Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle and Western Lamoille counties.
  • Long Trail District - Serving Orleans , Essex, Caledonia , Washington and Orange Counties.

Each of the 12 geocaches was placed near a local Eagle Project. There are hundreds of Eagle Projects throughout Vermont and we are hoping to showcase more than the 12 that are part of this series.

There is a special challenge cache for those who find all twelve CTE caches in Vermont. Cache to Eagle (CTE) Challenge.

About the Cache

This is a multi cache that requires you to find a camouflaged micro container at the above coordinates which will give you another set of coordinates. From here, you can walk or drive about 600 feet up the road to a location that is not in sight from here. The coordinates lead you to a picnic pavilion beyond a gate, but follow the directions below. You will need a compass to lead you to the final cache.

From the black gate, walk 98 steps at 145 degrees. This will not exactly be a straight line but you will follow the driveway. At the top of the driveway, you should have a lone maple on your left, another maple in the woods on your right, and will have an outhouse straight ahead of you with the cabin off to the left.

From here, walk about 48 steps at 194 degrees into the woods towards a large maple with three or four hemlocks near it. It will be a little tough to walk a straight line up the hill.

Go around the maple and continue at about 194 degrees for about 48 steps. Again, this won't exactly be a straight line, but this should get you to the area of the final.

Watch your footing on the way to the cache. You are looking for a small camo'ed four-tab container. The cache is winter friendly.

FTF prize is a Get Into the Game geocoin from geoscouting.org. Some items in the cache were provided by the Green Mountain Council.

This Guilford Recreation Club property has been the site of several Eagle projects over the years. The land was originally cleared as part of a Troop 403 Eagle project in the 1960s and was cleared again as another Eagle project, by Dale B., in the late 1990s. In 2003, Zach C. built a picnic pavilion for his Eagle project and John P. put up tree and shrub identification markers. In 2010, three projects were completed in the area. Two new benches were built for the ball field by Derek S. Jacob W. built portable benches that can be seen during events at the Guilford Fairgrounds. Matt C. built a stone fireplace near the Scout cabin, replacing a now-gone Eagle project fireplace from the '60s. The cabin on the property is mentioned in another cache, Scout Cabin 403.
