Geocache Description:

Armagh Franciscan Friary.

The Franciscan Friary was founded by Archbishop Patrick O'Scannail in 1263 - 64. It is the longest friary church in Ireland at 163ft long.
The ruins of the friary are located inside the gates of the former palace of the Protestant Archbishops of Armagh. Today the Palace Demesne, a 90 acre site, is home to Armagh City & District Council, The Primate's Chapel and The Palace Stables Heritage Centre.
The Franciscans played an important part in the city's religious life until the dissolution of the friary in 1542. Shane O'Neill burned the buildings in 1561, Hugh O'Neill repeated the act in 1593 and the friary was in ruins by 1600. In 1765, stone was removed from the friary walls, leaving an open shell. The surviving walls are those of the nave-and-chancel church and a 15 century tower.
The cache is a small tablock box with logbook and pencil, and some small swops.
Parking is available close to the cache.
