Geocache Description:

Matera - Madonna de Idris

La Madonna de Idris (o Santa Maria di Idris) è una piccola chiesa rupestre riccamente affrescata. Assieme alla retrostante Chiesa di San Giovanni in Monterrone, ricca di particolari affreschi bizantini, occupa interamente l'apice di una rupe che è posta al centro di tutta la conca del Sasso Caveoso. Il Sasso Caveoso è una delle tre parti (assieme a Sasso Barisano e Civita) che formano la parte antica della città di Matera, i Sassi.
Su questa rupe, di particolare aspetto paesaggistico, a strapiombo sul profondo torrente della Gravina di Matera, è posta una grande croce a segno della devozione popolare.
Al di sotto di questa chiesa si estende da un lato un cimitero scavato nella roccia comunemente indicato come cimitero barbarico; dall'altro lato sull'ampia piazza sottostante si erge, a strapiombo sulla Gravina, la grande chiesa settecentesca di San Pietro Caveoso.

E' una scatolina di plastica, contiene logbook e piccoli oggetti.

Matera - Madonna de Idris

Madonna de Idris (or Santa Maria di Idris) is a small cave church plenty of wall paintings. In the backside there is the cave church of "San Giovanni in Monterrone" which is rich of Byzantine wall paintings. The two churches together fill entirely the top of a cliff which is in the center of the Sasso Caveoso. The Sasso Caveoso is one of the three parts (the others are Sasso Barisano and Civita) which together form the old part of Matera, "i Sassi".
This cliff, sheer on the deep torrent Gravina, is really impressive to see. On the top is placed an iron cross, to remember the devotion of the citizens.
From one side it can be seen the church San Pietro Caveoso.

The cache is a small plastic box. It contains only the logbook and small objects.
