Voted "the most significant English language play of the 20th century", Waiting for Godot is Samuel Beckett's translation of his own original French play, En attendant Godot. The original French text was composed between 9 October 1948, and 29 January 1949. Two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, wait for someone named Godot. The play is considered by some critics to be one of the most prominent works of the "Theatre of the Absurd".

En attendant Godot est une pièce de théâtre en deux actes, en français et en prose, écrite en 1948 par Samuel Beckett, et publiée en 1952 à Paris. Deux vagabonds, Vladimir et Estragon, se retrouvent sur scène, dans un non-lieu à la tombée de la nuit pour attendre « Godot ». La pièce fit scandale à l'époque. Les premières semaines de représentations, la moitié de la salle sortait avant la fin de l'acte I. Aujourd’hui c'est probablement l'œuvre la plus célèbre du dramaturge irlandais.
