Geocache Description:

Trail is visible to the NE & SW.
This is one of the heavily travelled routes of the Santa Fe Trail Mountain Route. Wm. Becknell's 1st trading caravan was pack mules, no wagons. The trail was mostly a commercial trading endeavor, but was also used by new settlers & the Army.

This part of the Trail preceded the later route to Cimarron (located about 1 mile west). Cimarron was later settled by Lucien Maxwell & Co. as a Trading Post c.1860's. Ever larger freight wagons plied the trail; their wheels cut the crust of the prairies & over the last 180 years have eroded semicircular swales. The Mountain Route of the SFT offered less exposure for the travelers than the open plains, where Native Americans observed every movement. Satellite images show the trails well.

Cache has been moved about 20FT, south.
