Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Hermann Riverfront Park in Gasconade County. The park is located at the river’s edge so please keep a watchful eye on your children. Wheelchair accessible. Bring your camera and a pen to sign the log. At times, this is a high muggle area so be discreet. Note: Wharf Street is a one-way street.

On May 26, 1804, the Lewis & Clark Expedition camped along the Missouri River on an island at the southern end of Loutre Island near present-day Hermann. The party had made some 18 miles on this day aided by a wind that gave them a rare chance to use the sail on the keelboat. The following day, the expedition encountered several canoes and boatloads of traders. Some of these had come down from the Omaha Indian nation about 700 miles upriver; some had come down from the Pawnee nation on the Platte River; and some had come down from the Grand Osage villages on the Osage River. Sometime on the morning of May 27, the expedition passed the site of present-day Hermann and then continued on to the mouth of the Gasconade River. (Obtained from information sign at Riverfront Park)

Hermann is often referred to as the “Rhineland on the Missouri”. Surrounded by hills and bluffs on three sides and the Missouri River on the north, there is a similarity to the Rhine River region in Germany. In Hermann, you can indulge yourself in wineries, bed & breakfasts, restaurants, historic architecture, antique and specialty shops, the Katy Trail or just picnic at the Riverfront Park and watch the Missouri River roll past. Riverfront Park is sandwiched between the Missouri River and the railroad tracks with an Amtrak station nearby. Facilities include a concrete boat ramp, parking, sand volleyball, restrooms and a pavilion with picnic tables.
