This area “Spa water region” was first discovered by Allan Cunningham as he passed through on the 27th June 1829.

The Helidon Spa during the 1960’s was the hub of the district, hosting many family days out, picnics, school trips and end of year social activities. Water skiing was a very popular pastime on the nearby lake and the swimming pool was always full. Many of the local schools used to travel many miles to the Spa for their summer swimming lessons as this was the only pool in the area. The water for the pool was supplied from the natural spring nearby and never chemically treated. There were many naturally occurring fish in the pool and during lessons the fish could be seen swimming around the children. Many believed that the natural minerals in the waters were of great medicinal benefit.

The popularity of the Spa declined in later years as government rules directed that the pools needed to use treated water and backyard pools became more popular and travel became much easier with the opening of the Four Lane Highway to Toowoomba.
