Geocache Description:

This, our first hide, will have you investigating a 600 foot long, 80 foot high trestle bridge -- just one attraction on the Banks-Vernonia Linear Trail, originally a railroad right-of-way, and now an Oregon State Park. Study its structure well, look beneath the surface, and in the end you'll find this treasure!

Cache was placed with permission of the park ranger, who reminds you to visit only when the park is open, during daylight hours.

Don't worry, trains don't rumble along this trestle any more, although they hauled many a load of timber during Oregon's history. Stout beams from those logs were used to construct an impressive trestle bridge that looks as sturdy today as the day it was built. The pathway surface is new, synthetic decking, but we enjoy seeing the older structure underneath it much more -- and in the end, it holds a treasure.

The Banks-Vernonia Trail is the first linear state park in Oregon. The trail stetches 21 miles from Vernonia down to just ¼ mile north of the town of Banks, and connects to Stub Stewart State Park as well. The trail is open to all non-motorized users ... horse, bicycle, and walkers/hikers ... and is eight feet wide, with a four foot wide horse trail parallel to it. There are 12 bridges in all. Enjoy a great walk, bike, or horseback ride as part of your cache hunt.
