This cache is on the church grounds. Please respect parishioners and don't go on the church grounds if a service is being held, regular services are every fourth Sunday of the month at 9.30am.

Reverend Basil Davey Ashcroft 1887 - 1933
Vicar of Tinui Parish 1915 - 1927
He was born in Dunedin in 1887. After studying to obtain a B.A. degree he came to Masterton in 1912.
He conducted many services at Tinui, including one in August 1915 where he commemorated the commencement of war one year prior.
He was inducted at this church on 29th October 1915 as its Vicar by Thomas Henry Sprott, Bishop of Wellington.
Over the succeeding months he ran a number of collections at services for the “Wounded Soldiers Fund”. These collections must have rested heavily on his conscience.
You could imagine what he was thinking as he joined the large contingent at the that farewell troupes off to the Great War on March 2nd 1916 at the Langdale sports grounds (Whareama).
At Easter that year he announced that we intended to hold the service in honour of the men at war.
In the same parish newsletter lists the names of 7 local men, whose lives had already been lost in the Gallipoli campaign. It also recorded a similar number wounded or sick, and almost 2 dozen in training or serving. A heavy tool for a small community of 500.
St Marks festival day 25th April 1916 say the beginning of a day of commemoration. That day was the 1st anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, Turkey.
At 7:30am Rev. Ashcroft held a service in this building.
Later that morning the cross was raised on top of the Tinui Taipo (Mt Maunsell). The 4” x 4” jarra cross was carried up by locals and boy scouts.
There was a Memorial Service held at 3:00pm in the Town Hall. The town hall at that time was located directly across the road from the lychgate.
In 1924 a plinth was erect by the then Tinui School 500ms north of here. E176 4.190 S40 52.308. This was later moved to outside the War Memorial hall (built 1954). E176 4.338 S40 52.677
Less than 6 months later Ashcroft took leave from his post to join the 17th Reinforcement as a Chaplain Captain. He served in England and France.
The Rev. Ashcroft was back and holding services in April 1919 as the Parish of Tinui was struggling with the Influenza epidemic.
In 1920 he married a local lady Evelyn Mary Meredith Whitehead. He missed the ANZAC day service that year for he was on his honeymoon.
1927 say him leave Tinui for St Stephens in Marton where he served until his death in 9th November 1933, aged 46.
During his time in Marton he and his wife were frequently visited by his old parishioners from Tinui as they visited their children at school either in Marton or Wanganui.
He was buried in the Clergy reserve of St Stephen’s Church, Marton. The Tinui parishioners quickly contributed a substantial sum of money for his widow and his memorial.
