A challenging climb in beautiful Stevenson Ranch. Limited options that do not require ropes and advanced climbing gear, you might bring it just in case. You will definitely encounter unsure footing & walking on the edge of cliffs, loose rocks. Hiking boots, long pants, & gloves recommended. Possibility of encountering rockslides, poisonous Snakes or oak, Coyotes, Cougars, Skunks, other predators, & really big Bunnies.
A Mountain Challenge Cache- First of all be careful up there, there is no established trail which means a lot of crawling through overgrown brush, and finding your own path. If you have a Fear of Heights, Critters, Aversion to crawling through the brush on all fours or sliding down a steep grade on your butt, this Cache is not for you.
The History: The first time and only time I've seen anyone climbing on this ridge was back in 1999. They were climbing just before twilight, and I didn't see them again until a few hours later when the Sheriff's department helicopter was harnessing them up and lifting them to safety. You might want to start the climb in The AM.
Recent History: Back in 2006 my older Daughter [16] and Son [14] told me they wanted to climb a mountain. I thought is wouldn't be much trouble to climb one of these local hills. Leaving on bikes with backpacks with a few Sandwiches snacks and water we made three failed attempts at various angles before arriving at the top almost four hours later. Bruised and scraped from the brush we walked our bikes home victorious. It was much easier once a suitable angle of ascent was found. Record time for me was up and down in about an hour. Don't count on it being that quick. About a year later I took my fearless 11 year old son up as well, although I don't recommend this for any children.
Cache History: Congrats to Coach Dave45 for being the first to find!!
Up on top you will see some great views; lots of Hawks nest in the area and keep vigil over the intruders. I recommend you take some water and Provisions and stay a while to enjoy the view. Vertical climb should be about 350 feet for a 1,000 foot climb, or about three feet of rise to every ten feet of forward movement. Any way up will not be straight. The Cache is a cameo’s Ammo Box and contains the logbook, several mixed CD's, puzzles, some Lightning bolt coins, and a $10 bill for the first to find. Please gently replace the Cache as found, don't want it breaking open. Forgot to include a pencil. Please bring one with you!
Placed Cinco-de-Mayo 2010
Coordinates for the way I go up are shown on the newly added pictures. Start at the grate induction, proceed to palm circle, claw your way to cupcake and drop into the valley to find a hobbit tunnel to Funeral station. From there you will see a visible path to the summit.
