Der Buntsandstein bildet in seinem Verbreitungsgebiet oft spektakuläre Verwitterungsformen: isolierte Felsen von mehreren Zehn Meter Höhe. Sie sind meist als Naturdenkmale ausgewiesen, wie zum Beispiel der Teufelstisch bei Hinterweidenthal. In der Pfalz findet man nahe Eppenbrunn den sogenannten Altschlossfelsen.

Die Gesteine des Buntsandsteins bestehen überwiegend aus kontinentalen Ablagerungen, wie roten Konglomeraten, Sand- und Tonsteinen. Kennzeichnend für den oberen Buntsandstein ist in den norddeutschen Erdgasprovinzen das Rötsalinar mit mehreren Zehnern von Metern Mächtigkeit. Diese Evaporite zeugen von einem verbreiteten marinen Einfluss. Die Buntsandsteinabfolge in Mitteleuropa erstreckt sich von Frankreich (Elsass) und Luxemburg (Gutland) im Westen bis nach Polen und Weißrussland im Osten, sowie vom Süden der Schweiz bis nach Skandinavien im Norden. Im Südwestdeutschen Schichtstufenland tritt der Buntsandstein an der Ostflanke des Schwarzwaldes und im östlichen Odenwald zutage. Im Beckenzentrum in Südniedersachsen und Nordhessen werden Mächtigkeiten bis zu über 1000 m erreicht.

The new red sandstone often forms in its circulation area spectacular decomposition forms: isolated rock from several ten meters height. They are usually proven as nature thinking marks, like for example the devil table in Hinterweidenthal. In the Palatinate you will find close Eppenbrunn to the so-called "Altschlossfelsen".

The rocks of the new red sandstone exist predominantly out of continental deposits, like red conglomerates, sand and clay stones. For the upper new red sandstone is characteristic in the north Germans natural gas provinces the "Rötsalinar" with several decimals of meters of heigh. This Evaporite witnesses from one spread marine influence. The new red sandstone succession in Central Europe extends from France (Elsass) and Luxembourg (property country) in the west until Poland and Belarus in the east, as well as of the south of Switzerland until Scandinavia in the north. In the south west german country the new red sandstone become evident at the east of the "Schwarzwald" and eastern "Odenwald" In the basin center in south Lower Saxony and North Hesse the new red sandstone reaches hihgs up to over 1000 m.
