Geocache Description:

This is a series of caches placed in the surrounds of Great Shefford Village.

Parking can be found at the village hall N 51.28.580 W 1.26.897 or at the village pub. The start of the walk follows the the Lambourn Valley Way. The walk is not suitable for pushchairs as there are several 'kissing' gates and stiles to climb.

The walk is approx 3.7miles long, though can be extended to include some other caches located around the village. Some caches do not contain a pen or pencil, so please bring your own.

Congratulations to 'apgeoseeker' on being FTF!

From this cache you will get some great views of the surrounding countryside and the village. There have been settlers in Great Shefford since at least 400 AD. An Early Saxon graveyard discovered in 1890 contained 95 burials with jewellery and weapons dating from the fifth and sixth centuries. The name ‘Shefford’ is Saxon and probably means sheep ford, being derived from two words – sciep (sheep) and ford. In the Domesday Book it was spelt Siford and there are other early spellings.
