Geocache Description:

A salute to our ancestors in a pioneer cemetery overlooking a creek and beautiful Ontario farmland.

Susannah Askin came to Upper Canada from potato famine-ravaged Ireland in the 1840’s as a widow with small children and established herself as matriarch of her family over the next 60 years, until her death in 1906 at the age of 102.

Considering that she was about 5 feet tall and weighed 90 pounds, she proved to be Herculean in her legendary feats. She built her own log cabin from scratch. She walked weekly to Millbank for groceries and supplies (a distance of more than seven miles). But nothing could match the story of Susie and the sheep, a story which has been handed down for several generations.

So the story goes, she was offered a free sheep by someone in Millbank, if she could carry it seven miles on her shoulders, all the way home, without putting it down. She rose to the challenge and did complete her task, to the admiration of her community. Now she lies close by the cache in this pioneer cemetery and her memory lives on.

The small cache hidden nearby contains:
log book
pencils
sharpener
Irish Gaelic Cross geocoin
NY Mets pin
various coins of the world
authentic civil war musket ball
compass

And, as always, a worthwhile FTF prize. Carefully return the cache to its natural location. A wide road shoulder allows for sufficient parking space. The Irish pioneers of North Mornington welcome your visit.
