A simple find linked to our Odyssian theme. Our first cache GC1WEN6 was hidden on Kefalonia, overlooking Polis Bay, Ithaca (home of Odysseus)
Odysseus had been languishing on the island of the nymph Calypso (possibly Gozo). Each day she saw him looking homewards but he could not return to Ithaca. The goddess Athena pleaded with Zeus (the chief god) to allow Odysseus to return home to his wife Penelope back in Ithaca. Penelope was besieged by suitors, all aiming to get their hands on the kingdom.

Zeus sent Hermes with a message to Calypso to release Odysseus.
Binding on his magic sandals, Hermes flew over the waves to the island paradise where he found Odysseus. Calypso feeds Hermes nectar and ambrosia before hearing why he has visited her.
Odysseus is released, reluctantly, but not before she warns him of heartbreak and shipwreck to come.
