A simple find linked to our Odyssian theme. Our first cache GC1WEN6 was hidden on Kefalonia, overlooking Polis Bay, Ithaca (home of Odysseus)
The Cyclops is one of the more well known mythical creatures. With it's single eye it's a suitable character for Sci-Fi as well as tales of The Ancients.
The connection with Odysseus is this. The cyclops, Polyphemus, was one of a race who had built Olympus for the Greek gods. He was a goatherd and in this story, a giant. Odysseus and his men had come across Polyphemus after eating a goat which they'd killed. The Cyclops was not happy and gobbled up a couple of the men, washing them down with milk. Odysseus and his men were trapped by the Cyclops and on the menu, it seemed. Odysseus had to come up with a plan. He'd found a tree trunk which the Cyclops had decided to make a walking stick from. They set about cutting a 6 foot length, scraping off the bark and sharpening the end to a point. Having heated the point to harden it, they got Polyphemus drunk on wine. The Cyclops asked Odysseus what his name was. Odysseus replied that his name was 'Nobody'.When the wine had taken effect, the men rushed at the eye of the Cyclops and drove it deep. Polyphemus awoke with a roar. Other Cyclops heard the noise and came to investigate. When asked who had put the stick into his eye Polyphemus replied, 'Nobody'. In the confusion, Odysseus and his men escape.
The cache is a small clip-box with log and usual small items, one of which is a tape measure.
This cache, during Springtime, is within a very pretty bluebell wood. It has clearly marked paths and there is no need to stray from them to find the cache. Please keep dogs on a lead as you might need to leave the path to get them back again.
In Summer there are a few brambles...instead of bluebells.
