Geocache Description:

Back in 1965 Wainwright described the 1466ft fell of Knock Murton as the ‘Forbidden Peak’ in his chapter on Blake Fell, in the Western Fells. Knock Murton in those days merited just a brief paragraph, and a sketch of the summit cairns. When The Outlying Fells was published it was again overlooked, meaning that this fine little hill has few visitors. Nowadays access is unrestricted and the discerning walker can spend a pleasant hour or two in its ascent. It does have its own chapter in the Lakeland Peaks guide published by the FRCC.

Travelers on the A5080 will be aware of its detached dome above Lamplugh. A good view is to be had from Mockerkin Tarn.

The ascent can be started from either Fell Dyke car park, following the edge of the recently felled forest; or along the forest road which starts at Leaps, cutting up after the first gate.

It can be linked to an ascent of its parent fell Blake, but the direct connection, whilst passable, is steep and rough. To do this, head south east over the subsidiary summit (towards Red Pike) and then steeply down. There is a small path in the heather. You will see a stile over the forest fence below you. The path is indistinct in places through the trees. Bear slightly left but keep going down. You should end up on the path coming up from Cogra Moss just before it joins the forest road. This route descends 135metres in a lateral distance of 430metres !

The summit of Knock Murton is adorned with one of the finest wind shelters of any fell in the district. The view westward is excellent, to the coastal plain and beyond to Galloway. Ennerdale is well seen. The bulk of Blake Fell, impressive in itself, rather curtails the other views. Cogra Moss is not visible, but walk just a few paces towards where you think it should be – you will not be disappointed.

The cache is a small box, no tat, just a log book and a TB awaiting an adventure. Room for coins and small TB’s.
