Geocache Description:

Having set the Pentland Ridge Multi-cache series last year, and as a family of keen hill walkers who love and appreciate our local hills – the Pentlands - we thought it would be good to have a second multi-cache series along another part of the Pentland hills – the hills just to the south of the Edinburgh city bypass.

The Pentlands are a glorious set of hills that start within 8 km of the city centre and continue for 10 km in a south westerly orientation; there are 14 distinct hills between 406 and 579m high.

This walk (which isn’t quite as a long as the first series) is a still fine ridge walk and is very accessible to the city; it starts and finishes at Hillend – the terminus for the No 4 LRT bus and a mere 7 km from Princes Street!.

The walk takes in 5 tops (Caerketton East; Caerketton West; Allermuir; Castlelaw and Capelaw) all over 450m and involving a 14km round trip with 650m of ascent - about 2000ft!!

As with the main Pentland ridge, we have often done this walk, or parts of it, as a family many times (since it is so easy to get to) and, depending on your fitness, inclination and energy and whether you want to take a picnic, will take between 3 and 5 hours to complete.

This cache is close to the top of Allermuir Hill – at 493m, the highest hill in this part of the Pentlands. It has a glorious view of the city of Edinburgh to the north, the East Lothian coastline and the main Pentland ridge to the south. You can often see up to Ben Vorlich and Stuc a Chroin in the Trossachs and from the top we have also seen the Hills of Arran on a clear day – 125km away!!

We like doing the walk from east to west, but this depends on wind direction. Doing it this way you get most of the climbing done first and can enjoy the views along the ridge south and westwards – including to the main Pentland ridge.

As this cache is part of the “Another Pentland Ridge Multi-cache”, DO NOT forget to look on the underside of the box for the numbers which you need to collect to give you the clue to the co-ordinates for the final cache.

We hope you enjoy the walk - and the caching.
