Geocache Description:

The Long Hole used to be a favourite place to keep some of the fishing boats and small craft in Bangor in the days before the Marina was built. This inlet is tidal, in that any normal boat can get in or out for a couple of hours either side of high water. Once inside the bar at the entrance there used to be 4 to 5 feet of water even at low tide. This place used to be full of boats particularly in summer.

The Long Hole - empty Today

The inconvenience of the limited access and the provision of the new Marina really made this place redundant and there have been calls to fill it in and use it as additional car parking space.

There is a family connection here as my Father, who was the Borough Surveyor back in the sixties and early seventies, was responsible for placing the concrete walkway on the sea side of the Long hole and for extending its capacity at the outer end.

The only use nowadays is by by walkers and sea fishermen.

The cache is a 35mm film canister. Take care extracting and replacing so as not to damage the fixings (you'll see). Can be a muggly area and at high tide in a northeast wind can be wet! Wheelchair friendly all the way but help will be needed to extract the cache from its resting place. As there are drops in to water care is required with children.
