This will take you on a nice excursion to some of the highlights of Rocky Butte State Park and Natural Area. Most of this can be done from the comfort of your car or bike or even on foot. But you'll have to suffer a little exercise to reach the final. I always find that if I have to pay special attention to details I always see things I've not noticed before. Bring extra fingers 'cause counting IS required.
Enjoy the view as you count your way to the final but be careful not to get distracted from your counting accuracy!
The above coordinates are NOT the location of the actual cache. They are the coordinates for the entrance to a loopy tunnel on the way up to the summit loop.
Count the overhead lights in the tunnel. You will have to count ALL lights whether they are still there or just the recess where a light might have been at one time.
A = the number of overhead lights (an even number)
From here proceed on to the top of the butte. Starting at the point where NE Rocky Butte Lane meets NE Rocky Butte Road, count the following:
Count the number of brown "Joseph Wood Hill Park" signs affixed to the rock wall surrounding Joseph Wood Hill Park at the summit of Rocky Butte.
B = the number of brown park signs
Count (carefully) the number of ALL of the ornate lights ATTACHED to the rock wall surrounding Joseph Wood Hill Park at the summit of Rocky Butte.
C = the number of ornate lights
Count the number of "No Parking" signs on the INSIDE of the loop road around the summit of Rocky Butte. Include the "Fire Lane No Parking" sign. Be careful to look at these signs carefully and don't just count what appears to be another one.
D = the number of "No Parking" signs along inside of loop
Count the number of "No Parking" signs on the OUTSIDE of this same loop road. ONLY count those signs on the loop road itself. Don't count those on the approaches to the loop.
UPDATE: 8/16/2010
It appears there may be an issue with the number of "No Parking" signs on the outside of the loop. Apparent victims of misguided vehicular maneuvering. Until I can get up there to verify the actual count and perhaps reconstruct the math, I will give you E = 17 requiring no math changes at this time.
E = the number of "No Parking" signs along outside of loop
Getting dizzy yet? Good! Now for the "simple" math.
Just for a sanity check and to let the dizziness settle here is a checksum to validate your counting:
A + B + C + D + E = 77
The coordinates for the final cache location are:

where:
FF = C + D
GGG = E + ((C - B) * (A + D)) - C
HH = (A * B) - C
JJJ = ((D * E) / B) + E
Note: GPSr accuracy was 20 feet. I was getting a lot of signal fluctuation the closer I got to GZ.
