On the slopes of Pule Hill by a chimney above the railway tunnel
There is plenty of evidence of the railway beneath Pule Hill - 2 large round chimneys and several slag heaps. On cold days you'll see steam rising from out of these chimneys.
The chimneys are directly above the railway line in the Standedge tunnel.
The central of 3 tunnels at Standedge was completed by the London and North Western Railway, having acquired the former Huddersfield and Manchester Railway in 1847. This was a single line tunnel with a length of 3 miles, 57 yards (4803 m). The tunnel is located immediately to the south of, but at a slightly higher level than, the canal tunnel.
Park in the layby on the A62. From the left end, look up the hill and you'll see a line of boundary stones. They have LNWR on the side with a "B" on the top - my guess is it means boundary. Near the top of the hill they turn sharp right heading back to the road & form a triangle of the former LNWR land encompassing the chimneys and spoil heaps.
