PROMETHEUS
A GOD OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY
A FRIEND AND BENEFACTOR OF MANKIND
HE WAS CALLED THE FIRE STEALER ACCORDING TO MANY LEGENDS
HE WAS ‘A CULTURE HERO’ TO THE ANCIENT GREEKS, AND
IT WAS HIS DESIRE TO CREATE A BETTER HUMAN RACE
In Greek mythology Prometheus is a Titan, known for his wily intelligence, who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals for their use. Prometheus is credited with (or blamed for) playing a pivotal role in the early history of mankind. His name means ‘Forethought’.
'Prometheus' by Hermann Hohause guards a small area in which you will find five often ignored wall sculptures by Ian Bow . Titled 'The origin and pursuit of the GOOD LIFE', each represents an aspect of the town and people of Hamilton.
Earth: is the symbol of our origins – this rural centre with its roots in the soil.
Energy: the spirit and application required to use the talents given to us. Symbolizes Hamilton’s thriving commerce and industry.
Counsel: Learning is aided by wise counsel – the library and art gallery encourage wisdom and are the result of it.
Self: symbolizes the development of personality – the inner-self. It depicts a woman looking, as in a mirror into the hand of the menacing and fragmentary figure of the world. The art-centre is an expression of the personality of this town.
Serenity: the good life of the balanced person – the balanced town strikes a balance of primary industry, commerce and education.
On a sunny winter’s day you can stand in this sheltered location, soak up the warmth and peacefully contemplate the meaning of it all. Watch out for Muggles though, they not only roam the streets but also inhabit the adjacent buildings.
While you are here head around to the laneway at the back of the Art Gallery (S 37° 44.544 E 142° 01.452 [54H E 590236 N 5822271]). Look right up high to see a little known and rarely observed sculpture. The only details known are that a former Hamilton Art Gallery Director disliked the work so much that he had it mounted here for all not to see! The artist is unknown.
Originally designed as a fountain, it appears that water would have filled and overflowed from the largest of the gumnuts into a collecting bowl for recycling back through the sculpture. Placed in a garden and closely surrounded by plants this work could have real potential, but up there you are likely to be among the few who even know of its existence.
Multipath and cover errors occur at these locations. The coordinates are correct, your GPS may not be.
