Geocache Description:

This cache is in a park with a play ground,a circular walking path, and a nice view of the water.Have fun.

Le Griffon was considered the first commercial ship to sail the Upper Great Lakes. Rene-Robert Cavalier de la Salle built this ship along with Father Louis Hennepin and Tonti at this location. It was christened Le Griffon in honor of Count Frontenac, the governor of New France (Canada). The Griffon (a mythical creature with a lion's body and an eagle's head) was on his family crest. On August 7, 1679, the ship set sail in search of a water route to the Orient. It crossed Lake Erie to Detroit and stopped at a Jesuit mission on Michilimackinac Bay, then proceeded to the shores of Green Bay. There, LaSalle and Hennepin left the ship. LaSalle dispatched the Griffon back to Niagara but it disappeared mysteriously. It has been known as the legendary "Ghost Ship of the Great Lakes."
