This is the 8th in a series of caches that are based on places that have colours in its name. These can all be found on the 1 : 25,000 OS maps of Cornwall.
Well we had to place a cache in the Redruth area, although this one is on the outskirts but overlooks the town.
It is a small size lock & lock box with room for a few swaps.
This cache is hidden on a part of the mineral tramway network that is in this area. There is a criss-cross of tracks here, as 3 railway lines met at the top of Lanner Hill. The Hayle-to-Redruth mineral line, the Redruth and Chasewater Railway, and the Redruth - Tresavean line. These all served the mines in this area, taking minerals to the ports of Hayle and Devoran and bringing back coal to the mines.
The cache ( REDruth ) is namely placed, as the area all around is a deep red colour because of the minerals in the mine waste that is deposited here. All this area is part of the Old Wheal Buller mine.
There is parking for up to 5 cars at the given co-ords, which is the start of the mineral tramway. A flat walk to near the cache site, then a little uneven to the cache.
Walkers + dogs, horse riders and cyclists may well be close by - so be careful !
