Geocache Description:

Welcome to Ellicottville! This quaint little village is well known for its
winter skiing, yet the village is bustling with activity year round. Mrs. Nogg
and I always enjoy walking the main drag during the summer and visiting some
of the wonderful shops along the way. We also enjoy the history found in the
village. Whatever your interests, we hope that this walking tour will allow
you to visit the many faces of Ellicottville. Enjoy!

To find the final you will need to replace the letters below with numbers you
will find throughout the village.

N42 AB.CDE
W078 FG.HIJ

Begin your tour at Town Hall by the gazebo. The gazebo hosts many concerts
throughout the summer. There are a couple of plaques at the town hall that you
will use to find a few of the numbers you will need.

The bell was damaged in a major fire. One of the plaques states the year that
the major fire happened. Use this year to get the replacement for “B”.
“B” is equal to the third number of this date.

“I” is equal to the second number minus the fourth number in the
year that the town hall was entered on the National Register of Historic Places.

Now that you have learned about the history of this beautiful building it’s
time to head across West Washington Street (Route 242) and find the NYS education
Department Historic marker for the First Frame House. Use the second number
in the year that the house was built to replace “J”.

Now head north east up Washington Street (the main drag) and stop in front
of the old school there. After admiring the historic look to this building,
take note of the “Union Free School” etched above the arched doorway.
Using the date listed there, subtract the second number from the third number
to get the replacement for “D”.

Not too far from here is “The Bank Of Ellicottville”. There are
two years on either side of the name. Using the year to the left of the name,
subtract the second number from the third number to replace “A”.
Then replace “C” with the sum of the last two numbers in the year
to the right of “The Bank of Ellicottville”.

Head further through town until you get to “Aardvarks”.
While standing in front of the building, look low and find a sign for the Iron
Works that seemed to supply much of the steel to build these buildings. Using
the name of the city where this company was located, look at the last letter
of the name of the city. It resembles a number. Use this number to replace “G”.

Enjoy shopping at the many unique stores along your tour. Now it’s time
to get off the main strip and explore Monroe Street. Along Monroe Street you
will discover “The City Garage” shop. There are some interesting
etchings in the sidewalk in front of this shop, but the information you will
need is found on the wooden front door. Using the number of the Ski Workers
Local, replace letter “E” with the only number that is listed twice.
Replace “H” with the fourth number.

You should only have one number left at this point and I’m sure you are
getting tired and hungry by this point of our tour, so I left one of my favorite
places to eat for last. Head down Monroe Street until you find Balloons Restaurant.
Mrs. Nogg and I enjoy the live music here some evenings and always enjoy the
food. They are so proud of their restaurant that they want you to find it by
listing their name twice over their awning. Even at night they like to light
up both names with some hanging lights. “F” can be replaced with
the number of hanging lights over the “Balloons” above the awning.

Now you should have everything you need to complete your journey. You can drive
over to the final, but it is not far and the walk to the final is an enjoyable
one. Thanks for visiting!
