Keep in mind that a deg. of Lat. = 60 nautical miles, or 69.04 statute miles. This varies only slightly as the earth is bulging from rotational spin.
On the other hand, Lon. varies a great deal. At the equator the lines are furthest apart. At 30 deg. Lat. 1 deg. of Lon. is close to 60 statute miles, making a minute = 5274'. These lines get closer until at the poles they meet.
