cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,

Geocache Description:

English translation of the cachename: Separation plant
Full english translation follows below.

English:
For several years iron ore mines were operated in Bogen. The ore field in Bergvik had an ideal location, since you only needed about 1km railway down to the separation plant and shipment. Despite the short transportation, the mine did not get profitable. A/S Ofoten Jernmalngruver (translated to "Ofoten Iron Ore Mines Inc.") were in operation periodically from 1906 until it closed in 1939 and the mine was shutdown several times in that period. A period there were a so-called "Bondift" (run by local farmers), where local powers was responsible for operations and in 1936 the operation was taken over by A/S Sydvaranger with A/S Ofoten Jernmalngruver as a subsidiary. After the mining operation was shut down for the last time, the equipment was purchased by A/S Sydvaranger, dismantled and sent north to use in other mines right after the war was over.

Mining was also dependent on the power and A/S Ofoten Jernmalmgruver established a power plant in 1912 - 1913 and built a dam in Niingen, with about 120 m fall. After the iron ore business was closed, A/S Ofoten Jernmalgruver continued purley as a power company and laid the foundation for what is now the company “Evenes Kraftforsyning”.

Open pits and many ruins of buildings that were set up for mining is visible in the landscape around Bogen today.

This cache is in the ruins of the old separation plant. On the picture you see the separation plant as the big white building to the left in the picture.

The task for the separation plant was to separate the ore from the mass that was pulled out of the mines in the mountains. This was done by adding large amounts of water and since the ore is heaviest, the rest of slag was washed away with the water. Water was added using the pump housing which pumped water from “Strandvannet” into the separation plant. The excess slag was transported back to Bogen and is the basis for the ground that the City Hall and the industial area "Slaggen" ("The Slag") is build on today which you may see on the latest picture
