Skyhooks - Described as a glam rock band because of their flamboyant costumes , make up and stageshow , They broke the mould of Australian music and addressed teenage issues sending shivers down the spines of parents .
The band was made up of Greg Macainish on bass guitar and backing vocals , " Freddie Strauks on drums , Bob " Bongo " Starkie on guitar and backing vocals , Red Symons on guitar , vocals and keyboards , Graham " Shirley " Strachan as lead vocals .
Their debut album " Living in the 70's " went on to sell 300.000 copies and stayed number one for many months and had six tracks from this album banned from radio ! which was fantastic as it made Skyhooks even more popular . The bands second album EGO is not a dirty word debuted at number one, while the single “ Ego “ was sitting at number one on the singles charts.
The LP went on to sell over 200,000 copies and the EGO tour sold out completely .
Skyhooks appeared on the first day of Australian TV of color transmission and appeared on Countdown numerous times The band had numerous line ups in the late 70’s and Skyhooks played their last show at Kalgoorlie - June 8th 1980.
But there was no official announcement was made of the disband .
Come 1983 to much excitement to their fans they reformed to play another 14 shows and the New Album “ Live in the 80’s “ was recorded and filmed live at Festival Hall Melbourne .
They went on to tour again in 1990 and 1991 with their last Gig at Transformers Nightclub in Moorabbin March 3rd 1991.
Sadly Graeme "Shirley" Strachan The singer died in a helicopter crash on August 29, 2001.
On the rare occasion the rest of the band have a Jam and more recently with cover band “ Slyhooks “ ( check Slyhooks web site for concert details ) and are endorsed by Greg Macainish .
There is plenty of Youtube Video of Skyhooks and the Official Skyhooks Web Site has plenty of information on the band and a Fan Club .
So as Molly Meldrum says “ Do yourself a favour and check it out “
