Geocache Description:

A small cache on former Llandow airfield. Flat ground to side of road with parking available just to the north of the Cache. Terrain should be easy as it's flat grass but may be slippery in the wet. The cache location is a little overgrown and you may need to duck to avoid the persistant hawthorn tree - watch out for rougue brambles too. Once in the right place, it should be a pretty easy find.

Welcome to Llandow Airfield - don't panic, nothing but model aircraft have flown from here in years. 64 years ago however, it was a different story. There was a large RAF presence here along with St Athan and Rhoose - which are both close by. St Athan and Llandow were at one point linked by a taxiway - you can see it on the images from Google Earth if you look closely. A little way down the road from here is one of the runways, The road that this Cache is alongside is a former taxi way. This is a very small cache near to the official commemorative stone. It's not actually on the stone itself, but it is within sight of it. Please take a moment to read it and remember those who flew from here. Either side of the cache are lay-bys for parking - the northernmost one provides the easiest access for a cache and dash. There is no room for anything other than the log and a pencil (which are in there) - but it's not a 35mm film canister. I'm not going to give away too many details about it, otherwise you'd find it too easily. Nearby is Llandow industrial park on the grounds of the airfield. some of the original hangers and buildings are still visible, and the control tower is now a cafe. Cachers of a petrol head persuasion will also know about the Llandow Race track which is a little way to the south. There's also a go-kart track there if you fancy trying out your driving skills! Finally, although no flying has taken place here for some time, you will still find lots of air traffic in the area, setting up for it's approach into Rhoose airport.
