The Gold Ray Dam originally built in 1904. Two brothers Frank and C.R Ray had the daunting task to build a dam on the Rogue river. The idea was to use heavy timber that was logged from the rogue valley to set in the bed rock this is known to be a timber Dam. The Dam used rope drawn turbines to generate power to medford and surrounding areas.
Later a fish ladder was put in for spawning salmon. In 1921 the Dam was converted into a concrete Dam owned by what me know as pacific power company. for over 70 years this Dam generated power for the surrounding areas,in 1972 it was deemed not economical and or profitable the Hydro Dam was decommissioned and the facility was used for college studies on spawning Salmon.
This is the very last Dam on the Rogue river, this Dam will be removed in the near future. for the first time in over 100 years the Wild Rogue river will run free from the beginning at Lost creek lake 157 miles to the mouth of the Rouge in Gold Beach Oregon.
As a result to the Dam removal the topography of the Rogue river will forever be changed, some examples may include water currents may slow down dramatically such as Power house rapids a class 4 rapid this rapid may disappear all together or it might get stronger, islands in the river may go under the water and new islands may appear depending on the flow of water at the time. Salmon runs and deep pools in the river may change do to the changing of the currents. The river itself will change getting smaller in some areas and possibly getting larger in other areas revealing rock formations that were under water for nearly a century
Regardless of what happens we can only wait and see for ourselves. The Mighty wild Rogue river will once again flow freely for the first time in over a hundred years
