Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the vicinity of the NT Gas Compressor and
Scaper yard.

The NT Gas pipeline commences from the Meerinie field to the west of Alice Springs and begins its journey of some 1500 km to Darwin.

This pipeline was installed in the early 80's and was intended to supply gas from the Central Australian Desert to Darwin and all of the towns along the way.

The plant at the cache site is designed to provide a number of different objectives including: -

1. Providing a compressor facility to boost the gas pressure to cope with varying pipeline pressure.

2. Providing a high pressure acccess point into the pipeline to allow the entry exit and exit of pipeline scrapers (also called PIGS) to permit cleaning and inspection of the interior of the pipeline. It also permits the removal of any condensed liquid in the pipeline.

3. Provide a facility to permit the supply of gas to Tennant Creek and the nearby Warrego Mine by tapping into the main pipeline.

As usual try to be safe and enjoy the cache, of course be aware that there is a possibility of meeting hostile local residents (Snakes and Spiders) so take some care when recovering the cache.

Local Cachers The Mavericks have agreed to maintain the cache - once they find it.
