Geocache Description:

The former Zero Kilometre Stone. (1953-1975)


EN:
Zero Kilometre Stone is a 3 m high limestone sculpture in Budapest, forming a zero sign, with an inscription on its pedestal reading "KM" for kilometres. This statue marks the reference point from which all road distances to Budapest are measured in the country. The reference point had initially been located at the threshold of Buda Royal Palace, but was moved down to its present location by Széchenyi Chain Bridge when the crossing was completed in 1849.



The present sculpture is the work of Miklós Borsos and was erected in 1975. The first official monument had been set up at this spot in 1932, but was destroyed in World War II. A second sculpture, depicting a worker, was in place from 1953 until its replacement by the current one.

HU:
A „0” kilométerko szobor a Budapestrol induló foutak kilométerszámozásának kezdopontját szimbolizálja. A Clark Ádám téren 1975-ben avatták fel Borsos Miklós alkotását, a 80 cm-es talapzaton álló, három méter magas mészkoszobrot. A szobor szabályos tipográfiai 0 karaktert formáz meg, és mindössze két betu van rajta: „KM”. Innen számítják a magyarországi egyszámjegyu foútvonalak kilométereit (a Székesfehérvárról induló 8-as foút kivételével), de a 10-es és a 11-es foutak kilométereit is innen számolják.
Az úthálózat jelképes kiindulóponja eredetileg a királyi palota köszöbénél volt, ahonnan a Lánchíd építésekor helyezték át mai helyére 1932-ben. Az eredeti szobor nem maradt fenn.
A mai „0” kilométerko helyén 1953-ban állították fel Molnár László egy munkást és egy autókereket ábrázoló szobrát. Ezt 1974-ben áthelyezték a XVII. kerületbe, a rákoshegyi vasútállomáshoz.
