In 1585
rukten Spaanse troepen op naar Antwerpen, de belangrijkste
stad van de Nederlanden, in een oorlog om het gezag van de paus te
herstellen.
De tactiek die Antwerpen op de knieën dwong bestond erin om
stroomafwaarts de stad af te sluiten zodat ze niet meer kon worden
bevoorraad. Farnese, de Spaanse hertog van Parma, liet daartoe
duizenden bomen vellen in het Waasland en over kanaaltjes naar
Kallo transporteren. Van Fort Sint-Marie op linkeroever werd in een
mum van tijd een vlottende brug gebouwd naar Fort Sint-Filips op
rechteroever. Het bouwwerk was klaar op 25 februari 1585. De
toestand in Antwerpen werd snel onhoudbaar en de burgemeester
kapituleerde op 17 augustus 1585. Nadien werd de brug weer
afgebroken.
De Nederlanden waren hun hoofdstad voorgoed kwijt en Antwerpen
verloor zijn status van grootste Westerse stad na Parijs en
Noord-Italië. Grofweg de helft van de 100.000 inwoners vluchtten na
de val naar de buurlanden.
Het punt
waar je de stash vindt, ligt net buiten het oude Fort Sinte-Marie.
Het is sterk dat hier ooit een brug heeft gelegen.
Het fort is vandaag privé terrein. De school voor binnenvaart
CENFLUMARIN is er gevestigd. Er is ook een monument ter
nagedachtenis aan de vele zeelui en militairen die omkwamen op zee
tijdens de wereldoorlogen.

Hier aangekomen moet je even rekenen. Op 320° zie je een
industrieel gebouw met een naam van 10 letters erop. Tel voor
elke letter het alfabetisch volgnummer op (A=1, B=2, ... Z=26).

In 1585
Spanish troops advanced towards Antwerp, at that time the most
important city of The Netherlands also known as the Low Countries,
to reestablish the pope's authority.
The tactics that brought them victory was to seal off the city
downstream to prevent it from being resupplied. Farnese, the
Spanish duke of Parma, ordered the felling of thousands of trees in
the region west of the city (Waasland) and had them transported
over small canals to the town of Kallo. In no time the Spanish
built a floating bridge from Fort Saint Mary on the left bank to
Fort Saint Filips on the right bank. The construction was ready by
Feb 25th 1585. The situation in Antwerp quickly deteriorated to a
crisis and the mayor surrendered on Aug 17th 1585.
The Dutch lost their capital definitively and Antwerp its status of
biggerst Western city after Paris and Northern Italy. About half of
its 100,000 inhabitants fled to neighboring
countries.
The
stash is situated right outside the old fort Saint Mary. It's
impressive that once there was a bridge here.
The fort is private property today. It houses a school for inland
shipping CENFLUMARIN. There is also a monument in remembrance of
the many sailors killed at sea during the worldwars.

Here you have to calculate a bit. There is a big industrial
building at 320° with a name consisting of 10 letters. Count the
alphabetical sequence of every letter (A=1, B=2, ... Z=26).
