hayred: Time to archive this cache. It was nice while it lasted. Plenty of room for other caches to hide something if they wish.

Geocache Description:

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The BSA theme this year is "Get Into the Game" based on geocaching. Many states are participating in the Cache to Eagle Series (CTE). Vermont is participating with three geocaches hidden in each of our BSA Districts:

  • Ethan Allen District - Serving Addison, Bennington and Rutland Counties.
  • Calvin Coolidge District - Serving Windsor and Windham Counties.
  • Three Rivers District - Serving Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle and Western Lamoille counties.
  • Long Trail District - Serving Orleans, Essex, Caledonia, Washington and Orange Counties.

Each of the 12 geocaches is placed near a local Eagle Project. There are hundreds of Eagle Projects throughout Vermont and we are hoping to showcase more than the 12 that are part of this series. The Eagle Project in Hartness Park in Springfield VT was organized by Eagle Scout Dylan of Troop 216. A series of tag points, aka “you are here”, signs that highlight different parts of the park were added to the trail system here in addition to enhancing the trails themselves.

About the Cache

Original container has gone walkabout. Replaced with a metal micro bison tube container in a slightly different location which should be better. No need to climb down the slippery slope anymore unless you want to. The cache is just about in the center of all four trail heads - south of post #4 and north of post #8. (I know, strange numbering, but there a lot of trails and 5, 6, & 7 are on a side trail which comes together at point 8 with the cache trail.) If you start at the Woodbury Rd. end (post 1) the gps will direct you correctly to the cache. Don't go down the hill unless you want more exercise! There are Kiosks at each trail head with a map. There is also a box at each for maps for hikers which are restocked periodically. The north (Woodbury Rd.) is the easiest but not the shortest route. The water tank trail head is slightly longer but has the best parking. The other two are the shortest, but the steepest and not recommended unless parking is a problem elsewhere or you want a little more of a workout. FTF prize is a Get Into the Game geocoin from geoscouting.org.

Permission to place this geocache was granted to roostersting by the Springfield Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services. Director: Andy Bladyka. Special note - there are neighbors at two of the parking areas that "keep an eye" on the park. They have been notified of this cache.
