A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIPP CITY, OHIO
'Tippecanoe' was founded in 1841 by John Clark on 104 acres at the intersection of the Miami-Erie Canal and the road now called S.R. 471. Snowball Flour Co. (now Tipp Roller Mill) and Davi Whip Co. (now Buggy Whip Antiques) were located near Canal Lock #15.
Mr. Clark built his home on the southeast corner of 1st St. and Main St. (now the home of the Fraternal Order of Eagles). When he sold lots, he requested that no log buildings be erected. Thus, the town has a rich architectural legacy.
The name 'Tippecanoe' was derived from Wm. Henry Harrison's presidential campaign slogan, "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too!". A few years later "City" was added and that was its name until 1938 when the legal name was shortened to "Tipp City".
From 1840 to 1850 traffic along the canal was at its peak. In the early 1850's the railroad came into town and by the 1880's, canal traffic was eliminated.
In 1857, Sidney Chaffee created an Opera House on the 3rd floor of the Chaffee Building (now the Butler Building) at the southeast corner of 3rd & Main Sts. The opulently decorated opera house seated 600-800 people for operas, concerts, recitals, and traveling medicine and minstrel shows. In the 1920's a professional basketball team, the 'Tippecanoe Triangles' actually played there.
In 1875 Hyattsville, located west of Tippecanoe,(now Hyatt & Main Sts.) asked to be annexed so they might have better schools. Through annexation, the city grew far beyond John Clark's dream.
