LOCATED ON THE PADDOCK MOUND (THE BANKS). FORMED FROM PIT MOUNDS WITH THE KETLEY CANAL RUNNING THROUGH. THE CANAL WAS COMPLETED IN 1788 AND INCLUDED BRITAIN’S FIRST SUCCESSFUL INCLINE, DEVISED BY WILLIAM REYNOLDS BUT DISUSED BY 1818. THE CANAL STILL SERVED UPTONS COAL WHARF UNTIL 1842. (THE COAL WHARF WAS SITUATED ON THE LAND NOW OCCUPIED BY HOUSES DIRECTLY BEHIND CACHE # 1). KETLEY HAD THE CUSTOM OF ‘HEAVING’ (GROUPS LIFTING INDIVIDUALS OF THE OPPOSITE SEX INTO THE AIR) ON EASTER MONDAY AND TUESDAY BUT IT WAS IN DECLINE BY THE 1880’S. UPTONS HELD AN ANNUAL BONFIRE AND FIREWORKS DISPLAY ON TOP OF THE BANKS UNTILL THE MID 1980’S. PLEASE BEWARE NEAR WATER WITH CHILDREN AND NOTE THERE ARE SOME STEEP STEPS AND IT CAN BE MUDDY/SLIPPERY WHEN WET ALSO THERE MIGHT BE NETTLES IN SUMMER MONTHS! WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE AREA!
