All Fired Up!
According to the ancient Greeks, water, earth, air, and fire comprised the major elements of the universe. But the first three elements are all forms of matter, fire is not. Fire is the side effect of matter changing form. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), each year fire kills more Americans than all natural disasters combined. In 1999, more than 15,000 home fires started by candles were reported to public fire departments
Fire requires fuel, oxygen, and heat to exist. Take away any one of those elements and you extinguish the fire. Fires begin with an ignition. This can happen when there is enough heat to provide the energy needed for a chemical reaction PLUS fuel vapor in the environment PLUS oxygen. The heat can come from different sources such as a match, a lightning strike, a spark from rubbing two sticks together, or a lit cigarette. The energy from the ignition makes the molecules of the fuel and nearby oxygen move faster, which causes a reaction when they collide. The leading cause of home fires is cooking. The leading cause of home fire deaths is smoking. Smoke can be lethal and rises because hot gases are lighter than air. In a smoke-filled room, the air lower to the ground is cleaner, somewhat cooler, and generally offers better visibility. If you must travel through a smoky area to get to safety, crawl low on your hands and knees, under the smoke, to your nearest exit. Fire can consume a room within three minutes. Most electrical fires start in the bedroom. The hot smoky gases radiate heat and form a layer at the top of a room. As the air is drawn into the smoky plume, the smoky layer descends closer to the floor, becoming hotter and blacker. As it radiates more and more heat to the rest of the furniture, eventually everything within the room reaches ignition temperature and catches fire. This is called flashover. The temp of the hot smoky gases at the point of flashover is about 1,112 degrees, and may climb to over 1,832 degrees F.
To extinguish a fire, you need to remove one of the required elements: fuel, oxygen, or heat. Water absorbs heat and, when it changes into steam from the heat of the fire, it repels oxygen. Smothering a fire, for example, by throwing sand onto a campfire, removes the oxygen. The foam in a fire extinguisher removes the oxygen as well.

My husband is retired Air Force and he says that the firefighters always said, "A great day is, washing the truck!" "because there weren't any fires to fight and everyone was safe"
