Geocache Description:

An easy cache and dash that has been placed to celebrate the work of Sir Bernard Lovell.

He was born in 1913 in Oldland Common. The nearby school is named after him.
One of the world’s foremost radio astronomers, he received his Ph.D. at the age of 20 from the University of Bristol, worked for the Air Ministry during World War II, and lectured at the University of Manchester after the war.

He built the first giant radio telescope (1957) at Jodrell Bank (now the Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories), near Manchester with a bowl diameter of 250 ft (76 m). The instrument is used for astronomical research and spacecraft tracking and communication. He was knighted in 1961.

The telescope came to public notice when it was used to track the first Sputnik in 1957 and the American manned moon landing in July 1969. It has also been prominent in the discovery of Pulsars and Quasars.
The cache is being used as the ‘launch pad’ for a Space Shuttle Geocoin marking the latest launch on 14th May 2010. Please endeavour to keep to the space theme for any swaps or trackables.

Sadly Sir Bernard Lovell passed away in August 2012 at the ripe old age of 98.

You are looking for a small clear container.
