Geocache Description:

The Phoenix Foundry

A relatively easy access two-stage cache. Locating the details at the start point will lead to the final cache. There is a seat near starting point that can be used to wait for the muggle traffic to pass while you take notes.

The Phoenix Foundry operated in Stanley Street for over eighty years.

One of the foundry’s furnaces was unearthed in 2002 as part of the construction of a stormwater treatment device for the Transit New Zealand Grafton Gully Project.

The remains of the furnace consisted of four flues and pert of the casting floor onto which the molten metal was poured. Foundry castings, slag, scrap metal and slagged bricks were concentrated around the furnace remains.

The Phoenix Foundry played an important role in Grafton Gully from the 1860s through to the 1950s, when it finally ceased operating. The flue was part of a furnace that was used for melting scrap metal. The foundry was a large operation spread over two acres. It was a major employer in the area and provided engineering equipment for many industries throughout the North Island such as flour milling, shipwrights and mineral extraction.

Nearby were large industrial wells relating to a 19th century brewery and further north the remnants from the early 20th century Waiwai bottling plant were also uncovered.

A section of flue has been reconstructed and gifted by the Grafton Gully Project Team.

Spot the muggles...or is this a bunch of cachers trying to blend in?

The Grafton Gully Project is an integral part of Transit New Zealand’s Central Motorway Improvements. Together with the other two key roading projects (Central Motorway Junction and Harbour Bridge to City) the Grafton Gully Project will play an important role in improving the central motorway network and reducing congestion in Auckland. The area is largely used for traffic between the Northwestern and Southern motorways, the Ports of Auckland and the lower CBD as well as for access to Auckland Hospital, Mission Bay and Parnell.

Part of this monument is a plaque that gives information needed to find the cache and log book.

To find XXX you must subtract from the year the foundry opened by the number one thousand four hundred and ninety six.

To find YYY you must take the year it closed and subtract seventeen hundred and fifty.

The cache is located next to a very busy road which also has high muggle traffic at certain times of the day, so please try to be discrete.

Parking is limited but there are some drop off zones close by.

Cache contains a log and pencil. Please return to same location.
